What is the Burnett Cup?

The Burnett Cup is the Wide Bay’s Premier Matchplay Golf Event. Starting in mid-January, over 100 teams of 2 compete in a knock out competition for a prize pool of $7200.

The Plate

For those unlucky enough to be knocked out in the first round, they are entered into the Peter Hitchcock Plate (men) or Penny Tieniker Memorial Plate (ladies). The plates are then played alongside the Burnett Cup, with both Cup and Plate winners being crowned on the same day.

The Calcutta

One of the highlights of the Burnett Cup is the Calcutta night held before the first round. A night of laughter, drinks and ‘high-finance’ is always in store. Some take it quite serious, pooling their resources into a syndicate, and studying the nominations to decide who they are going to back. Others are just there to try their luck.

All of the teams are raffled off. Make sure you buy plenty of raffle tickets as you never know your luck which team or teams you might draw in the raffle. You could turn a tidy profit just by drawing a sought-after team.
Each team is then auctioned off with 50% of the sale price going back to the person who drew that team in the raffle. If you drew a team in the raffle, you may want to go on to buy them in the auction as your bid price is effectively halved as 50% of the purchase price is returned to you.
Team owners are then paid out based on their teams finishing position, with the owners of the winning team usually earning several thousand dollars.
